Kirkwood is an eastern Missouri city. It had a population of about 27,500 residents in 2010 according to the United States Census Bureau. The city, situated in St. Louis County, is considered a suburb of St. Louis and was the first planned suburb located west of the Mississippi River. The city was founded in 1853 and is named in honor of James P. Kirkwood, who built the Pacific Railroad through the city.
